Red, White, and Denim Collage
In this lesson, a worn pair of blue jeans becomes a reference to Old Glory, Americana, and Independence as a texture-filled piece of fabric art! Blue jeans were patented in San Francisco more than 140 years ago, and are still recognized around the world as a true American fashion staple. Despite the name - and much like the American cultural landscape - blue jeans come in a diverse variety of hues and textures. Often incorporating zippers, pockets, seams, labels, patches, and more, your favorite garment provides plenty of elements to cut, collage, and structure into a low-relief sculptural work of art! Plus, the work pays homage to Jasper Johns’ famous “Flag” paintings once embellishment is added using paint or markers - providing teachers with a lens into art history. From sea to shining sea, students from grades 3-12 will be enthralled with the possibilities in this lesson!
